The Hamilton-Wentworth  District School Board, The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, Mohawk College (Delta SS Campus) and local school boards have partnered to offer this opportunity for students who want to pursue a career as a Hairstylist.

This program combines instruction in high school and at Mohawk College and provides a Cooperative Education placement working in a salon. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in their graduating year with a minimum of 26 credits.

Career as a Hairstylist

A Hairstylist is a highly motivated and creative individual who has the ability to deliver the very best in creative colouring, effective highlighting, colour placement as well as cutting techniques, chemical relaxing, permanent waving, long hair design, scalp analysis and the proper sanitation of tools per industry standards.

In this program, students complete three (4) credits towards a Hairstylist Certificate of Apprenticeship by attending classes at Mohawk College (Delta SS Campus) every Monday and Tuesday. Upon graduation, students are encouraged to continue their apprenticeship training at Mohawk College.

Students will complete 2 credits in Hairstyling (TPE3E and or TPE4E) and two credits in co-operative education tied to these courses.

To qualify, YOU must:

• Be in your graduating year with at least 26 credits
• Have an interest in working within the Service Sector as a Hairstylist
• Be in good academic standing, including completion of all compulsory courses required for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
• Be willing to attend Mohawk College (Delta SS Campus) and a Cooperative Education placement in Semester 2
• A limited number of spaces are available.

Program components include:

Pre-employment orientation and integration sessions at the home school
A Cooperative Education placement in a Hairstylist salon
Two days per week at Mohawk College (Delta SS Campus) to continue their apprenticeship in-school training
16 weeks at a Cooperative Education placement in the hairstyling industry

Program Credits/Certification:

Earn 4 credits in total towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
Hours and skill competencies completed at co-op placement to be documented and counted towards the apprenticeship in Hairstyling
Hairstyling “Basic Level” Certification

A Guidance Counsellor or Cooperative Education teacher must help you to complete an application form for the Accelerated Program and submit all required documents.
