Automotive Service Technician

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, Mohawk College (Fennell Campus), and other local school boards have joined forces to offer this opportunity for students who want to pursue careers as Automotive Service Technicians.

This program combines instruction at their home schools and Mohawk College and provides a Cooperative Education placement in the automotive repair and maintenance industry. This is a 2-year program. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in Grade 11 and Grade 12. Students in Grade 12 must be in their graduating year with a minimum of 26 credits.

Career as an Automotive Service Technician

To qualify, YOU must:

An Automotive Service Technician inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and services mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems and components of cars.

In this program, students complete the “Level One” portion of the in-school apprenticeship training for Automotive Service Technician at Mohawk College. The education and training opportunities are provided at home schools and at Mohawk College (Fennell Campus). Students will spend three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at the workplace, and two days (Tuesday and Thursday) at Mohawk College completing the Level One Apprenticeship in-school training.

Students will receive Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship training in an ultra modern facility at Mohawk College.

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have an interest in transportation technology
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Demonstrate strong work habits and a positive attitude
  • Have a working knowledge of general mathematical principles
  • Students must be registered apprentices before attending the AST accelerated program

Program components include:

A selection committee that includes industry partners may interview candidates.
A limited number of spaces are available.

Grade 12 students attend their home school for semester one for 4 classes
Students will spend three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at the workplace, and two days (Tuesday and Thursday) at Mohawk College completing the Level One Apprenticeship in-school training.
Students will receive Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship training in an ultra modern facility at Mohawk College.

Program Credits/Certification:

Upon successfully completing the program, you will:

  • Receive four co-op credits in the work place and graduate from your home school
  • Successfully complete the “Level One” Apprenticeship training for Automotive Service Technician with valuable work experience and extensive skills training
  • A Guidance Counsellor or Cooperative Education teacher must help you to complete an application form for the Accelerated Program and submit all required documents.
