Refractory masons protect structures from high heat by installing special refractory bricks, castables, blankets, plastics, or ceramic coatings to furnaces and kilns. They must be skilled at laying refractory bricks, installing castables, and removing old refractory masonry. This is a specialty trade for those who are certified as brick and stone masons.

Educational Prerequisites
The minimum qualification for entry into this trade is a Certificate of Qualification as a brick and stone mason.
Note: High school graduation is recommended for entry into this trade. Employers often require more than the minimum educational requirements set by the province. They may also prefer apprentices who have taken certain courses related to their program.
