Mould designers plan out the moulds that are used to shape plastic and other materials. They decide which type of mould should be used for a process, and then design the layout of the mould components. They then finalize the drawings of the mould design that will be used in manufacturing facilities to produce precisely measured parts.

• The Mould Designer apprenticeship consists of 24 months of on-the-job training.
• Apprentices must also complete 240 hours of in-class technical training.
• Once you have successfully completed the apprenticeship requirements, you receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship and are certified as a journeyperson in the trade.
• A person with at least 4,000 hours of related work experience and a Certificate of Qualification as a mould maker is eligible to apply for a Trade Equivalency Assessment (TEA) and, if successful, becomes certified as a journeyperson in this trade.

The Mould Designer apprenticeship is granted to a person who has successfully completed a Certificate of Qualification as a mould maker and has on-the-job experience as a journeyperson. Note: To enter the Mould Maker apprenticeship program, high school graduation is required. Employers often require more than the minimum educational requirements set by the province. They may also prefer apprentices who have taken certain courses related to their program.
